Researchers from the Float Clinic and Research Center at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma, have been doing clinical tests on how the environment of laying in a super saturated solution of Epsom salt and water while controlling temperature, touch, sight and sound. They’ve been able to prove this floating technique can relieve everything from spinal pressure and pain to alleviate anxiety.

What are the Side Effects of Flotation Therapy?

Are There any Restrictions?

Rashes - Although uncommon, you may experience a rash from the Epsom salt. It is recommended to rinse very well after your session to remove any excess salt remaining on your skin.

Disorientation – It may take you a few minutes to orient yourself back to reality. During your float, you will be devoid of light, sound and touch so it may take time to process what day it is or what time it is. Give yourself plenty of time to reorient yourself to come back to reality.

Nausea and vomiting – Some users may experience nausea during or after the float session. This could be due to vertigo, motion sickness or disorientation. This should ease after your float, or throughout the day.

Burning sensation – A burning sensation may be felt if you have any cuts, scrapes or hangnails. It is recommended to place a thin layer of ointment on the area as a protective barrier against the salt. Occasionally woman have experienced a burning sensation in their private parts. This is due to pH imbalance and may cause a sensitivity.

Tired or unmotivated – Clients react to Flotation Therapy differently. Some may feel refreshed after floating and others may feel tired. This is a temporary condition and should ease within time.

Rattled – Feeling rattled, nervous or worried in the next 48 hours are an uncommon side effect and should ease. It may be necessary to allow time in-between float sessions.

Do not float if you have any of the following conditions: epilepsy or serious psychological conditions, drug or alcohol intoxication, infectious disease or serious skin disorder, kidney disease (without doctor permission), open wounds and serious conditions that require heavy sedating medication, respiratory disorder, incontinence, serious physical limitations, have a pacemaker or serious heart disease, gastroenteritis (diarrhea) within the last 48 hours, have extremely low blood pressure, have had chemotherapy in the last two months, currently menstruating, currently breastfeeding, have a new tattoo within the last two weeks or a henna tattoo, inability to climb in and out of the pod unaided, are under 18 years of age without parental supervision.

Those with asthma, a heart condition or diabetes should seek advice from their healthcare provider and provide authorization to use the float pod. Wait at least 5 - 10 days after any chemical processing of your hair, have henna dyed hair, undergoing keratin hair treatments or dreadlocks. Spray tanning and make sure that your hair and/or skin wash clear before you float.

We recommend not shaving on the day of your float as the salt water may cause skin irritation. Do not eat a heavy meal within an hour of floating.

Pregnant women can get relief from float therapy, especially in their advanced stages. The anti-gravity effects eliminate all pressure points from the body and provide true rest. The float pod can be the perfect haven for pregnant women. We do require that you to speak with your doctor before floating.

Please do not float with any oils, moisturizers, conditioners, perfumes or creams on your body or in your hair (we provide you with a specific organic body wash & shampoo to use before you float to remove all body oils). This is to ensure our water remains pristine, clean & pure.

I Still Have Concerns

Will I be able to Drown?  What if I'm not a good Swimmer?

While it is possible to drown in any pool of liquid, float tanks are much safer than most other bodies of water because they contain a high concentration of salt. It is impossible to sink in a float tank, and you must exert a conscious effort to turn onto your side or attempt floating face-down. Many people safely sleep while they are floating.

What if I am claustrophobic?

People who have claustrophobia typically report no problems during their session. You have full control of the lights and music in the pod and you can leave it open or exit at any time.

Being in the pod is more like floating in space than being in an enclosed space. You’re always in control of your environment. You may keep the door open a little or fully, and light on or off. People with extreme cases of claustrophobia have consistently reported no problems.

Many people who initially express a fear of small spaces feel much better once they know they control the entire process. Their fears subside and the vast majority will go on to close the door and turn off the light!  The first comment people say after exiting the pod is “Wow, it was much easier than I expected".
